This world-class French restaurant has been a legend in Boston since it opened in Old City Hall in 1971. Like many excellent restaurants, it's family-owned and -operated--proprietors Lucien and Ann Robert are executive chef Andrée Robert's parents, and nephew Jacky Robert took over in the kitchen in 1996 after many years as a top chef in San Francisco (including 10 years at Ernie's).

Maison Robert has only improved since Jacky Robert returned. The formal dining room was already spectacular, with majestic crystal chandeliers and tall windows. The food equals the setting, classic but dramatic, with unexpected but welcome Asian influences. You might start with a tender, airy Roquefort soufflé or smoked lobster cream soup. Entrees include options you would expect and pleasant surprises--filet mignon is a meat-lover's delight, Dover sole is served à la Meunière, and ostrich medallions are marinated in Asian spices and served with a leek salad. Desserts are impressive, ranging from excellent souffles to heart-stopping chocolate concoctions to upside-down apple tart, served warm with cinnamon sabayon.

On the ground floor is the cozy Ben's Café. It's more casual and less expensive than the upstairs room but also thoroughly French. In the summer, cafe seating spills onto the lovely terrace next to the landmark statue of Benjamin Franklin.

Main courses $10-$22 at lunch, $17-$32 at dinner. Le Cafi fixed-price menu $18 or $25; ` la carte main courses $14-$28. Open: Mon-Fri 11:45am-2:30pm; Mon-Sat 5:30-10pm. Reservations recommended. Credit Cards: AE, CB, DC, MC, V. T: Red Line to Park Street or Green Line to Government Center. Valet parking available at dinner.
