Le Commensal
1204 av. McGill College
(At rue Ste-Catherine)
tel.: 514/871-1480
Location: At rue Ste-Catherine
Cuisine: Vegetarian
Price Category: Inexpensive
CURRENCY CONVERTER

Le Commensal serves vegetarian fare buffet-style. Most of the dishes are so artfully conceived, with close attention paid to aroma, color, and texture, that even avowed meat eaters don't feel deprived. The only likely complaint is that dishes that are supposed to be hot are too often lukewarm. There are over 100 items, from appetizers to desserts. Patrons circle the table helping themselves, and then pay the cashier by weight, C$1.65 (US$1.15) per 100 grams. The second-floor location affords a view, which compensates for the utilitarian decor. There is no tipping.

Le Commensal has been expanding, with nine branches scattered around the greater Montréal area and in Toronto. Another convenient in-town location is at 1720 St-Denis and Sherbrooke (tel. 514/845-2627).

Dishes priced by weight; most meals under C$12 (US$8.55).Open: Daily 11:30am-10pm.Reservations not accepted.Credit Cards: AE, MC, V.Métro: McGill or Bonaventure.
