Housed in the corner of a squat old office building halfway between Square Victoria and the Old Port, this is a generously proportioned space, more corporate than folksy in tone. That atmosphere is strengthened at lunch, when brokers, lawyers, and execs entertaining clients predominate, most of whom resist the impulse to whip out their cellphones. Evenings, they bring their spouses and girlfriends or boyfriends and mingle with neighborhood residents. It didn't take much imagination to put together the menu, filled out as it is with bistro standards. But just because you've seen these things before -- fried calamari, lobster bisque, crab and corn cakes, duck confit, calves' liver with onions -- doesn't mean the food isn't satisfying. Dishes are prettily, but not prissily, composed, and are often served in deep bowls that the ingredients don't require (a stylistic conceit that perhaps needs re-examining). Consider the daily specials, which are often more inventive than the standard menu. One such special was a halibut filet with gently braised celery root and saffron potatoes. If nothing appeals on the specials list, there's always the reliable hanger steak avec frites.
