Château Frontenac

Opened in 1893 to house railroad passengers and encourage tourism, this monster version of a Loire Valley palace is the city's emblem, its Eiffel Tower. The hotel can be seen from almost every quarter, commanding its majestic position atop Cap Diamant. Franklin D. Roosevelt and Winston Churchill held two important summit conferences here in 1943 and 1944. Visitors curious about the interior may wish to take one of the 50-minute guided tours offered daily 10am to 6pm from May 1 to October 15; Saturday and Sunday 1 to 5pm from October 16 to April 30 (departures on the hour). They cost C$7 (US$5) for adults, C$6.25 (US$4.45) for seniors, and C$4.50 (US$3.20) for children ages 6 to 16. To make reservations, which are required, call tel. 418/691-2166.
