La Madeleine

In 1944, during Paris's liberation, Ernest Hemingway and a group of Allied soldiers made history by "freeing" the Ritz from the Nazis and ordering a round of martinis. The Ritz commemorates this event in the Bar Hemingway with bookish memorabilia, rows of newspapers, and stiff drinks served in a woodsy English-club setting. Look for its entrance, and homage to other writers, close to the hotel's rue Cambon entrance. More fun than the Bar Vendôme, the Hemingway is virtually a singles bar -- unfussy, chic, and often filled with newly single, attractive women, many taking classes at the on-site cooking school. The Vendôme, in contrast, retains its old-world stateliness. Between 5:30 and 8:30pm, it's wise to reserve a table.

Open: Daily 7:30am-7pm.Free admission.Métro: Madeleine.
