St-Germain-des-Prés

This is the hyper-artsy and theatrically decorated bar of a hotel that has wooed film-industry types who want to avoid the more mainstream luxury of Paris's palatial hotels. The rose-filter cheeriness is deceptive: This is the hotel where Oscar Wilde died, disgraced and impoverished. In 2000, the bar, along with the rest of the hotel, was renovated by decorating bigwig Jacques Garcia. Expect a high-Victorian color scheme of terra cotta and dark green, marble columns, an imposing marble-topped bar, and an appealing sense of baroque (or Byzantine) intrigue. Drinks here sometimes segue into the nearby on-site restaurant, which is open Tuesday to Saturday from noon to 3pm and 8 to 10:30pm.
