Musée de la Chasse (Hunting Museum)

Near the Musée Carnavalet, this mansion was also designed by Mansart, and its museum is for the specialist who, like Hemingway, hunts for sport. Mounted heads are plentiful, from the antelope to the elephant, from the bushbuck to the waterbuck to the bush pig. You'll find a Rembrandt sketch of a lion, a number of Desportes wild-animal portraits, and rifles (many from the 17th century) inlaid with pearls or engraved with ivory. The outstanding hunt tapestries are often perversely amusing -- one a cannibalistic romp, another showing a helmeted man standing eye to eye with a bear he's stabbing to death. The collection of paintings includes works by Rubens, Breughel, Oudry, Chardin, and Corot.
