The setting here makes you feel like you're in the prop room of an opera house. As the manager says, "We're the show after the show." The decor is sort of neo-Ottoman, and the cuisine celebrates the bounty of the Mediterranean, especially Turkey and Cyprus. In a Victorian building behind the Theater Royal, the restaurant is decorated with battered urns, old lamps, fading lampshades, and knickknacks -- an old Turkish curiosity-shop look. Ten opera boxes adorn three sides of the restaurant; the royal box is the most desired. The restaurant takes its name from a character in Mozart's The Magic Flute. Live opera performances are staged from time to time. Launch your meal with delights like asparagus in red-wine sauce or fresh grilled sardines. Fresh fish is the way to go for your main course, especially river trout or grilled halibut. A zesty favorite is lamb Anatolian style (with eggplant and zucchini). We're also fond of the well-seasoned lamb meatballs. A good-tasting specialty is chicken Sarastro, made with walnuts and raisins.
Main courses £8.50-£15 ($14-$24). Fixed-price menu £10-£20 ($16-$32); pre-theater menu £10 ($16).Open: Daily noon-midnight.Reservations required.Credit Cards: AE, DC, MC, V.Tube: Covent Garden.
