A collection of nearly 2 centuries of historic vehicles is displayed in a splendid Victorian building that formerly housed the Flower Market at Covent Garden. The museum shows how London's transport system evolved, and a representative collection of road vehicles includes a reconstruction of George Shillibeer's Omnibus of 1829. A steam locomotive that ran on the world's first underground railway, a knifeboard horse bus, London's first trolleybus, and a Feltham tram are also of particular interest.
Originally an operational Tube depot, the Depot at Acton Town is now a branch of the main museum, containing 370,000 items not currently on display at the Covent Garden site, ranging from station signs and posters to transportation memorabilia. Highlights include the first Routemaster bus and a spiral escalator from 1906. The Depot is open to the public on a limited basis through guided tours. Call tel. 020/7379-6344 to find out when the Depot is open, and to book a tour. The Depot is located at Gunnersbury Road, Acton Town. The Tube stop is Acton Town.
