Sherlock Holmes Museum

Where but on Baker Street would there be a museum displaying mementos of this famed fictional detective? Museum officials call it "the world's most famous address" (although 10 Downing Street is a rival for the title). It was here that mystery writer Sir Arthur Conan Doyle created a residence for Sherlock Holmes and his faithful Dr. Watson. These sleuths "lived" here from 1881 to 1904. In Victorian rooms, you can examine a range of exhibits, including published Holmes adventures and letters written to Holmes. This is a very commercial and artificial museum, and strikes us as a tourist trap. Holmes fans might be better off just visiting the gift shop downstairs and buying a postcard or a deerstalker. Some of the merchandise is interesting, though no Persian slippers -- for shame.
