Highgate Cemetery

Described in the British press as everything from "walled romantic rubble" to "an anthology of horror," this 37-acre burial ground is the setting for a fine collection of Victorian sculpture, as well as the graves of Karl Marx, George Eliot, Christina Rossetti, and Elizabeth Siddell, wife of Dante Gabriel Rossetti and the Pre-Raphaelites' favorite model. You must take a tour in order to see the western cemetery. However, there are no guided tours of the eastern part of the cemetery; visitors can wander about at will. Allow about 30 minutes to reach this attraction from Piccadilly Circus.
Open: Western Cemetery: Mar-Oct guided tours only Mon-Fri at noon, 2, and 4pm, and Sat-Sun hourly 11am-4pm; Nov-Feb guided tours Sat-Sun hourly 11am-3pm. Eastern Cemetery: Apr-Oct daily 10am-4:30pm; Nov-Feb daily 10am-3:30pm.Western Cemetery guided tour £3 ($4.80). Eastern Cemetery £2 ($3.20) admission, £1 ($1.60) camera pass charge (no video cameras; hand-held still cameras only).Both cemeteries are closed at Christmas and during funerals.Tube: Northern Line to Archway, then walk or take Bus 43 or 134.
