City Hall

On the South Bank of the Thames, adjacent to Tower Bridge, this is the new home of the mayor of London and the London Assembly. Her Majesty dedicated the gleaming, egg-shaped building -- a 10-story steel-and-glass structure -- in July 2002. Foster and Partners, one of Britain's leading architectural firms, designed the building. The new home of the city government has become London's latest -- and some say, most controversial -- landmark. Half of City Hall is open to the public. The views from the rooftop gallery are worth the trek over to the South Bank. An exhibition space displays changing cultural exhibits, and there is a cafe on site.

Open: Visitors Center daily 9:30am-5pm, cafe daily 8am-8pm.Free admission.Tube: London Bridge.
