LASSCO (London Architectural Salvage & Supply Co.)

Established in 1978, this company controls the largest inventories of architectural remnants in the UK, with warehouses chock-full of mantelpieces, stained glass windows, antique doors, statuary, ecclesiastical accessories (including, among others, assorted pews from Victorian-era churches), and garden ornaments. Each piece was rescued during the renovation or demolition of buildings throughout Greater London. Many of them originated within unheralded private homes; others come from public buildings that have included the Palace of Westminster and the Royal Opera House. The company's headquarters and most impressive showroom occupy a deconsecrated Victorian church.

A particularly interesting annex of this outfit (same phone, same tube stop) lies within a 5-minute walk at Britannia Walk, N1. It specializes in antique doors, a resource that building contractors and architects usually find fascinating. Small, easy-to-transport antique items are available, including some charming 19th-century woodworking tools. Any of the large objects available here can be crated and shipped.

Headquarters at St. Michael and All Angels, on Mark St., off Paul St., EC2Tube: Old St..
