In the former 18th-century cooperage (barrel-making factory) of the Royal Naval Dockyard, Frog & Onion is the most traditional British pub in Bermuda. It's "named" for the owners, French-born Jean-Paul Magnin (the Frog) and Bermuda-born Carol West (the Onion). You can sit back with a pint of English lager in the shadows of the cooperage's enormous fireplace. Many folks stay to dine: At lunch there are standard sandwiches, salads, lasagna, and some tasty bar pies. We especially like the beef barley pie with Guinness for a real taste of Bermuda, although you might opt for the shepherd's pie. The dinner menu includes all of the lunchtime choices plus some more delicious European dishes. Your best bet for the evening might be the featured local fish plate. Food is not spectacular, but it is well-prepared and rather hearty fare. Since portions are large, no one leaves hungry.
Lunch sandwiches, salads, and platters $8.50-$16; dinner main courses $10-$24.Open: Mon-Sat 11:30am-4pm, 6-9:30pm; Sun noon-4pm, 5:30-9pm. Bar daily noon-midnight.Closed Mon Dec-Feb.Credit Cards: MC, V.Bus: 7 or 8 or ferry from the City of Hamilton.
