This restaurant appears here mainly because hundreds of visitors to Southampton patronize it. Sad to report, it used to be good, but has fallen off in recent years. Although, if you like a faux-Tudor place where the waitresses are still called "wenches," it might be your cup of tea. There's nothing wrong with stopping in for a drink at this bustling spot lying below Gibbs Hill Lighthouse. But it's not worth a special trip to dine here. The restaurant is decorated with oak furnishing, brass railings, and period style lighting fixtures, a bit gimmicky and lacking a theme related to the island at all. The English draft beer in the split-level Oak Room is always refreshing, and in summer and on winter weekends, there is often entertainment, usually beginning at 9:45pm. As for the food, proceed carefully -- simpler is better. And read the fine print: There's a $20 minimum. Appealing to modern day Henry VIIIs, the menu attempts to entice with beef dishes, but you'll fare better at another "chophouse," the Rib Room.
Lunch main courses $7.75-$22; dinner main courses $21-$38, early-bird dinner (6-7pm) $30, Sun brunch $25 per person.Open: Daily noon-2:30pm and 6-10pm.Reservations required for dinner.Credit Cards: AE, MC, V.Bus: 7 or 8.
