The name of this popular restaurant and bar, a chicken-and-ribs kind of place, is a colloquialism: Bermudians are known as onions, and "M. R." stands for "'em are," or "they are." The restaurant resembles an Edwardian-era bar, with potted palms, leaf-green walls, and brass and oak trim. Caricatures of many Bermudians hang on the walls. If you go early, plan to have a drink at the large, rectangular bar that fills most of the front room. During happy hour (daily 5-7pm), it's a favorite rendezvous for local office workers. There is a cybercafe in the bar, where you can surf the Web or check e-mail while enjoying a drink. The charge is $10 for the first hour and $5 for each additional hour.
Both the bar and the dining room serve well-prepared meals that are favorites with locals and visitors alike (especially families). Specialties include the house onion soup, and fresh fish -- including tuna, wahoo, rockfish, and mahimahi -- which can be charbroiled, pan-fried, or served with slivered almonds or spicy Cajun seasoning. Tasty barbecued chicken, ribs, burgers, and steak (no-fuss meals popular with kids), are also available. Maybe you'll even have enough room left for mud pie, cheesecake, or another creation from the dessert trolley. Meals here are generally satisfying but hardly memorable. There's a nonsmoking dining room, much appreciated by families because smoking is allowed in many of Bermuda's restaurants.
