They aren't making a half-hearted boast with the name of this place. This and the other five outposts of this local chain are named for the founder, a Canadian born in Germany. Presumably he grew homesick for tastes of his native land and opened his first restaurant in this 1811 building near the top of Place Jacques Cartier to assuage those cravings. Think multiple variations of chipolata (little spiced pork sausages), kasseler (liverwurst), sauerkraut, and 100 brands of beer -- that gives the general outline of the menu. Forget grease and oozing globules of fat, though, for these are lighthearted sausages, brightly seasoned with herbs, curry, hot pepper, and even truffle shavings. A special lunchtime sampler of three different types of sausage (bratwurst, cevapcici, and diable) comes with fries and kraut and costs just C$9.95 (US$7.10) -- a terrific deal. Three jars of mustard sit on each table. While sausage plates are the stars, there are also mixed grills, chicken schnitzels, fondues, salads, and mussels nine ways. Service can be disjointed, but rarely to the point of irritation. There is another branch at 1310 de Maisonneuve Est.
Main courses C$10-C$15 (US$7.15-US$11); table d'hôte lunch C$9-C$13 (US$6.45-US$9.30); dinner C$15-C$17 (US$11-US$12).Open: Daily 11am-10pm.Credit Cards: AE, DC, MC, V.Métro: Champ-de-Mars.
