NIGHTLIFE: THE PERFORMING ARTS

L'Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal (OSM)

This world-famous orchestra performs at Place des Arts and the Notre-Dame Basilica, as well as around the world, and may be heard on numerous recordings. For many years, it was under the baton of Swiss conductor Charles Dutoit, but a well-publicized flap involving charges of his autocratic rule brought about his resignation in 2002. His replacement (or return) is uncertain at this writing, but it can be assumed that the orchestra's balanced repertoire will continue to run from Elgar to Rabaud to Saint-Saëns, in addition to Beethoven and Mozart. The box office is open Monday to Saturday noon to 8pm. The full season runs September to May, supplemented by Mozart concerts in Notre-Dame Basilica on six evenings in June and July, interspersed with free performances at three parks in the metropolitan region. People under 25 can purchase tickets for only C$10 (US$6.45) on the day of a concert.
