Locanda Veneta's citywide renown belies its tiny size and unpretentious setting. Its location, across from the unsightly monolith that is Cedars-Sinai Hospital, is a far cry from Venice's Grand Canal, and the single, loud, tightly packed dining room can sometimes feel like Piazza San Marco at the height of tourist season. But the sensible prices reflect the restaurant's efficient decor. While the dining room is decidedly unfancy, the kitchen is dead serious, making this restaurant a kind of temple for knowledgeable foodies. The soups are excellent, seafood dishes extraordinary, and pastas as good as they get. Signature dishes include pasta-and-bean soup, veal chops, lobster ravioli, shrimp risotto, and perfectly grilled vegetables. Though the dessert menu is long and tempting, I usually go for the crema de vaniglia, a dense, silky custard topped with caramel and chocolate sauces.
Main courses $10-$26.Open: Mon-Fri 11:30am-2:30pm and 5:30-11pm; Sat 5:30-11pm; Sun 5-10pm.Reservations required.Credit Cards: AE, MC, V.Valet parking $3.50.
