La Jolla's best--and friendliest--breakfast is served at this turn-of-the-20th-century bungalow on a sunny village corner. Newly modernized, the cottage is light and airy, but most diners opt for tables outside, where a charming white picket fence encloses the trellis-shaded brick patio. Omelets and egg dishes feature Mediterranean, Asian, or classic American touches; my favorite has creamy mashed potatoes, bacon, and melted cheese folded inside. The Cottage bakes its own muffins, breakfast breads, and--you can quote me on this--the best brownies in San Diego. While breakfast dishes are served all day, toward lunch the kitchen begins turning out freshly made, healthful soups, light meals, and sandwiches. Summer dinners (never heavy, always tasty) are a delight, particularly when you're seated before dark on a balmy seaside night.

Main courses $6-$9 breakfast, $7-$11 lunch, $9-$15 dinner.Open: Daily 7:30am-3pm; dinner (June-Sept only) Tues-Sat 5-9:30pm.Reservations accepted for dinner only.Credit Cards: AE, DISC, MC, V.Bus: 34.
