The best of the mini-chain of restaurants operated by Bazaar del Mundo, Casa Guadalajara is actually located a block away from the shops, which provides another advantage: It's often less crowded than its counterparts (though waits of 30 min. or more are not unusual here Fri and Sat). Mariachi tunes played by strolling musicians enliven the room nightly, and you can also dine alfresco, in a picturesque courtyard occupied by a 200-year-old pepper tree. Birdbath-size margaritas start most meals, while dining ranges from gourmet Mexican to simpler south-of-the-border fare. My favorite is the tacos de cochinita--2 soft corn tacos bulging with achiote-seasoned pork and marinated red onions--but the extensive menu features all the fajita and combo plates most people expect. This place (like the Bazaar) is touristy, but it's where I bring out-of-towners for old California ambience and reliable Mexican food.
Main courses $8-$16.Open: Sun-Thurs 11am-10pm; Fri-Sat 11am-11pm.Reservations recommended.Credit Cards: AE, DC, DISC, MC, V.Bus: 5/5A. Trolley: Old Town.Free parking.
