NIGHTLIFE: THE CLUB & MUSIC SCENE

The Casbah

It may have a total dive ambience (and black-walled bathrooms grimy enough to make you clench muscles you didn't even know you had), and passing jets overhead sometimes drown out ballads, but this blaring Little Italy club has a well-earned rep for showcasing alternative and rock bands that either are, were, or will be famous. Past headliners at the 200-capacity club have included the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Will Oldham, White Stripes, and local act Rocket From the Crypt. Look into advance tickets if possible; live music can be counted on at least 6 nights a week. Every month or two the Casbah turns into Jivewire, with wall-to-wall bodies on the small dance floor and ear-to-ear new wave, disco, and hip-hop classics on the sound system.
