Fog City Diner
1300 Battery St
(at The Embarcadero)
tel.: 415/982-2000
Location: at The Embarcadero
Cuisine: American
Price Category: Moderate

More popular because of its Visa commercial than for its food, Fog City is a tourist destination, with locals straggling in for business lunches. The restaurant looks like a genuine American metallic diner -- but only from the outside. Inside, dark polished woods, inspired lighting, and a well-stocked raw bar tell you this is no hash-slinger. Here dressed-up diner dishes include gourmet burgers, salads, "warm breads," soups, sandwiches, cioppino, macaroni with Gouda cheese, and pork chops. Fancier fish and meat meals include grilled catches of the day and thick-cut steaks. Light eaters can make a meal out of the long list of "small plates," which include crab cakes and quesadillas with asparagus and leek. The food is fine, but if your heart is set on coming here, do so at lunch -- you'll be better off elsewhere if you want a special dinner.

Main courses $11-$22.Open: Mon-Thurs 11:30am-10:30pm; Fri 11:30am-11pm; Sat 10:30am-11pm; Sun 10:30am-10pm.Reservations recommended.Credit Cards: DC, DISC, MC, V.Bus: 42.
