This trattoria is one of my favorite standbys, producing consistently good Italian fare at decent prices. The large split dining room in Levi Plaza, a few minutes from PIER 39, has a lively atmosphere and smart decor. By day it buzzes with Financial District types and socialites; by night, with couples and gathering friends.
If you don't have a reservation and can't wait to eat, pull up a stool at the marble-topped bar, with its unobstructed view of the open kitchen and dining room. On a sunny day, grab a patio table that looks onto Levi Plaza's fountain. Once you're situated, the first of many delights is the basket of fresh-baked breads, breadsticks, and a dipping dish of olive oil. Complement them with any of the delicious salads or the daily soup (especially if it's carrot), then venture on to any of the pastas, pizzas, or main courses. Parents especially appreciate the "bambini" menu, which features pint-size fare for under $6. Desserts are decadent and wonderful. Try tiramisu and a glass of rose grappa -- a perfect way to end the meal.
Try Il Fornaio for weekend brunch, too. You'll find a nice selection of Italian-inspired egg dishes and great crisped and seasoned home fries.
