NIGHTLIFE: THE CLUB & MUSIC SCENE Frommer
Cafe du Nord

Although it's been around since 1907, this basement supper club is rightfully self-proclaimed as the place for a "slightly lurid indie pop scene set in a beautiful old speakeasy." With a younger generation now appreciating the music--swing, jazz, alternative, pop, you name it--the place is often packed from the 40-foot mahogany bar to the back room, where the focus is on live performances. Note: If Lavay Smith and Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers or Ledici are in the house, definitely don't miss it. Du Nord puts out its own great compilation CDs, which you can purchase from the club.

2170 Market St.Phone: 415/861-5016.Cover $3-$10.
