Some say this is the most romantic restaurant on the beach; South Beach's gay crowd certainly seems to agree. Old-fashioned lace curtains and candlelight are a welcome respite from the glitz and chrome of the rest of the island. Most people don't even realize this restaurant exists. But don't think that means there are empty tables. Jeffrey's certainly has its fair share of regulars.

You can choose a succulent 3/4-pound burger, or try a hearty chicken breast marinated in balsamic sauce and served with freshly mashed sweet potatoes over spinach, on white lace tablecloths. Some of the better seafood options include the conch fritters and the meaty crab cakes. Macadamia-encrusted tilapia is exceptional. Most desserts are tasty (there's an old-fashioned dessert cart to tempt you), but the homemade tarte tatin, a caramelly deep-dish apple tart, is delicious.

Main courses $12-$24.Open: Tues-Sat 6-11pm, Sun 5-10pm.Closed Sept.Reservations highly recommended.Credit Cards: AE, DC, MC, V.
