Best known as the diner where Ronald Reagan ate during his 1983 campaign in Miami, La Esquina de Tejas Hondureña has gained a national reputation for its great food and low prices. There's a shrine dedicated to the former president in the "Presidential Quarters," and the menu even has his signed autograph and the presidential seal of approval. This Cuban restaurant was recently bought by Hondurans, who serve its excellent food in either a Cuban or Honduran style, depending on what you choose. For instance, if you order the traditional Cuban steak dish, carne asada, you can choose it if you want it prepared Cuban style (fried) or Honduran style (grilled). There is also a completely new Honduran menu to choose from, featuring tacos, enchiladas, and baleadas (flour tortillas with butter, refried beans, and cheese). You must try the arroz a la marinera, the Cuban version of Spanish paella. It's filled with clams, oysters, mussels, lobster, shrimp, squid, snapper, stone crab, and scallops cooked in fresh seafood broth. If you're not in the mood for seafood, try the vaca frita, a grilled, shredded flank steak served with moro rice (black beans cooked with white rice) and maduros (sweet, fried plantains). Another house specialty is the masas de puerco fritas, a pork tenderloin cut in chunks, roasted, and then quickly deep-fried and served with mojo, grilled onions, garlic, olive oil, and bitter orange. You won't regret a trip here.
Daily specials $7-$15; appetizers 75¢-$5.50.Open: Daily 8am-5pm.Credit Cards: AE, MC, V.
