Mick's is one of the best of the Underground restaurants, a two-story, turn-of-the-century-themed restaurant in Humbug Square. It's fronted by a gas-lit wraparound porch enclosed by black wrought-iron fencing, great for viewing indoor "street" action while sipping Pink Panty Pull Downs (vodka-spiked pink lemonade). The main dining room, done up in Victorian saloon red and black, has whitewashed brick walls hung with Early American patchwork quilts. Upstairs is a cozy bar. There's also cafe seating on both levels. There is often live entertainment of the talent show variety going on in Underground, which can make dining in the courtyard area extremely loud. If this is the case, be sure to ask for a table inside.
Mick's is best known for solid casual fare, from snacks to full meals, but the best bets are the hefty burgers or chicken grills, in various incarnations, accompanied by fries or pasta salad. Their delicious twist on fried green tomatoes with roasted red bell pepper sauce and crumbled goat cheese will dazzle your taste buds (my grandma can't even make them this good). Daily pasta specials and salads are good, and the portions are generous. The honey walnut chicken salad and salmon salad are especially popular. There's also a pretty good kids' menu, making this a favorite for families. Whatever you order, leave room for the rich, silky-smooth chocolate cream pie topped with whipped cream, one of the most sinful chocolate desserts in town.
Mick's has additional locations, including one in Midtown at 557 Peachtree St. (tel. 404/875-6425), one near Peachtree Center at 229 Peachtree St. (tel. 404/688-6425), one on the main level of Lenox Square mall (tel. 404/262-6425), and one in Buckhead at 2110 Peachtree Rd.
