This totally unpretentious neighborhood hangout has got the best biscuits in town, but that's not all that makes folks willing to wait up to an hour and a half for a table. A cozied-up storefront near the funky Little Five Points area, it's got an around-the-clock breakfast menu that will get you over the worst day-after-the-night-before and an assortment of dishes that are best described as comfort food for the granola crowd.
Orange-scented French toast with raspberry sauce and honey crème anglaise is hard to beat for breakfast, especially when accompanied by homemade turkey and sage sausage. But the aptly named Love Cakes, a mix of black bean and cornmeal, sautéed and topped with tomatillo salsa, sour cream, feta, and raw onion spears, will steal your heart away. Though there's a vegetarian slant to the menu, there's plenty to please carnivores, from turkey meatloaf, thick-sliced and grilled, to the ever-changing warm chicken salad atop organic field greens. There are nightly chicken, seafood, and pasta specials, too. You can get a cup of coffee while you wait outside for your table, but to avoid the serious crowds, come on a weekday or in the early afternoon. If you have any sullen teenagers in your party, they'll think you're really cool for bringing them here. They recently added a second location in Midtown at 1001 Piedmont Ave. (tel. 404/874-8887).
