Underground Atlanta

This 12-acre mix of shops and restaurants is not as vibrant as it was several years ago, but it still can be fun to browse if you're staying downtown. There are dozens of shops, plus vendors in Humbug Square selling merchandise off antique pushcarts. Shopping options include clothing stores for men, women, and children, running the gamut from lingerie at Victoria's Secret to sportswear at the Gap. Other interesting emporia include Art by God (fossils and rare mineral specimens), African Pride (gifts and apparel with an African-American theme), Kandlestix (where candlemakers display their craft), and Papier D'Couleur (papier-mâché birds, fruit, and animals). There are also novelty stores such as the bargain mecca, Just a Dollar.

Of course, there's a food court and a couple of good restaurants, including Mick's. For lunch, you might try Johnny Rockets, an entertaining 1950s-style hamburger joint the whole family will enjoy. If you're driving, there's parking in two garages off Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive. Open Monday to Saturday 10am to 9pm, and Sunday noon to 6pm.
