Ichiban
47 Kaahumanu Ave
(Kahului Shopping Center, Kahului)
tel.: 808/871-6977
Location: Kahului Shopping Center, Kahului
Cuisine: Sushi/Japanese
Price Category: Inexpensive

What a find: an informal neighborhood restaurant that serves inexpensive, home-cooked Japanese food and good sushi at realistic prices. Local residents consider Ichiban a staple for breakfast, lunch, or dinner and a haven of comforts: egg-white omelets; great saimin; combination plates of teriyaki chicken, teriyaki beef, tonkatsu (pork cutlet), rice, and pickled cabbage; chicken yakitori; and sushi -- everything from unagi and scallop to California roll. The sushi items may not be inexpensive, but like the specials, such as steamed opakapaka, they're a good value. We love the tempura, miso soup, and spicy ahi hand roll.

Main courses $4.25-$5.25 breakfast; $5.50-$9.50 lunch (combination plates $8); $5.95-$28 dinner (combination dinner $12, dinner specials from $8.95).Open: Mon-Fri 6:30am-2pm and 5-9pm; Sat 10:30am-2pm and 5-9pm.closed 2 weeks around Christmas and New Year.Credit Cards: AE, DC, MC, V.
