Dana Pastula managed restaurants at Lanai's Manele Bay Hotel and the Four Seasons Resort Wailea before opening her tiny, charming outdoor cafe in this sunlit sliver of Makawao. And the alfresco dining is just part of it: From the sandwiches (roast chicken breast, turkey breast, prosciutto) and salads to the soup of the day, the offerings are homemade and excellent. The chic Makawao shopkeepers who lunch here never tire of the quinoa salad, the ginger chicken soup, the roasted-beet-and-potato soup, the curry chicken salad, and the talk of the town -- a towering Asian salad of Oriental vegetables, tofu, and baby greens, tossed in a sesame vinaigrette with fresh mint, ginger, and lemongrass, and served over Chinese noodles. Our favorite? The shiitake mushroom soup with chicken long rice and the snow crab-avocado sandwich -- too good to be true.

Sandwiches and salads $4.95-$6.95.Open: Mon-Sat 11am-4pm.Credit Cards: Not accepted.
