(Lower Kula Rd., past Holy Ghost Church, across Morihara Store)
tel.: 808/878-6874
Location: Lower Kula Rd., past Holy Ghost Church, across Morihara Store
Cuisine: American
Price Category: Inexpensive

Despite its out-of-the-way location (or perhaps because of it), Cafe 808 has become the universal favorite among upcountry residents of all ages. The breakfast coffee group, the lunchtime crowd, kids after school, and dinner regulars all know it's the place for tasty home-style cooking with no pretensions: chicken lasagna, smoked-salmon omelet, famous burgers (teriyaki, hamburger, cheeseburger, garden burger, mahimahi, and taro), roast pork, smoked turkey, and a huge selection of local-style specials. Regulars rave about the chicken katsu, saimin, and beef stew. The few tables are sprinkled around a room with linoleum-tile floors, hardwood benches, plastic patio chairs, and old-fashioned booths -- rough around the edges in a pleasing way, and very camp.

Burgers from $3.50; main courses $4.50-$9.95.Open: Daily 6am-8pm.Credit Cards: Not Accepted.
