It's easy to get lost while searching out this wonderful cafe, but it's such a find. We never dreamed you could dine so well with such pleasing informality. The tiny cafe with a few tables indoors and out has a strong local following for many reasons. Becky Speere, a gifted chef, and her husband, Chris, a former food-service instructor at Maui Community College and a former sous chef at the Maui Prince Hotel, infuse every sandwich, salad, and muffin with finesse.
All breads are prepared in-house, including rosemary potato, Scottish country, French baguette, and green onion and cheese. The scene-stealing kalua turkey sandwich is one success layered upon another: moist, smoky shredded turkey, served with cheese on home-baked French bread and covered with a green-chili and cilantro sauce. For breakfast, eggs chilaquile are a good starter, with layers of corn tortillas, pinto beans, chilis, cheese, and herbs, topped with egg custard and served hot with salsa and sour cream. At lunch, the Greek salad and veggie burrito are excellent. Because this cafe is located in an industrial center of sailboard and surfboard manufacturers, you may find a surf legend dining at the next table. The cafe is 1.4 miles past the Haiku turnoff and a half-mile up on the left.
