Although Charlie's (named after Charlie P. Woofer, a Great Dane) is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, breakfast is really the time to come here. Located in downtown Paia, Charlie's is a cross between a 1960s hippie hangout, a windsurfer power breakfast spot, and a honky-tonk bar (which does get going after dark). Before you head out to Hana, head for Charlie's for a larger-than-life breakfast (eggs, potatoes, toast, and coffee will set you back only $7, and your probably won't be able to eat it all). They have plenty of fancy espresso drinks, but the plain ole coffee is excellent. Lunch is burgers, sandwiches, calzones, and pizza. Dinner is grilled fish and steak -- hearty, but nothing to write home about. You will see all walks of life here, from visitors on their way to Hana at 7am to buff windsurfers eating mounds of food at noon to Willy Nelson on his way to the bar to play a tune.

Breakfast items around $7; lunch items $10; dinner main courses $12-$25.Open: Daily 7am-10pm.Credit Cards: AE, DC, DISC, MC, V.
