The Brig Carthaginian II
This restored square-rigged brigantine, an authentic replica of a 19th-century whaling ship, the kind that brought the first missionaries to Hawaii, was closed for "repairs" when we went to press. Apparently the old vessel has become a liability, and the people in charge were leaning towards getting rid of the old boat versus repairing her. As we went to press, history lovers were frantically trying to raise funds to either restore the old ship or purchase another replica of the same era. If you don't see her proud masts at the foot of the Lahaina Pier, then you know her fate. If the ship is still there, drop by; the floating museum features exhibits on whales and 19th-century whaling life. You won't believe how cramped the living quarters were -- they make today's cruise-ship cabins look downright roomy.
Open: Daily 10am-4:30pm.Admission $3 adults, $2 seniors, $5 family.
