Tucked away on the sixth floor of the ritzy 900 N. Michigan indoor mall (home of Bloomingdale's, Gucci, and more), Oak Tree isn't exactly high-profile. But it's popular with the younger ladies-who-lunch crowd -- in fact, it's one of my favorite places for a meal during a day of downtown shopping. The cafe decor is bright and cheery (with nature-inspired murals to help you momentarily forget that you're inside a mall). If you can, get a table along the windows that look down on Michigan Avenue -- but be aware that everyone else coming to eat here wants those tables, too. Oak Tree's real draw is the enormous, varied menu. You'll find something to suit every taste: a large salad selection, Asian noodles, sandwiches that range from trendy (duck breast with mango chutney) to manly (meatball with roasted bell peppers), Mexican quesadillas, even blue-plate specials such as turkey hash or a patty melt. The breakfast menu is just as extensive. Oak Tree can get crowded during prime weekend lunch hours, but it's relatively calm by mid-afternoon -- just about the time you've power-shopped all your energy away and need a break.

Main courses $7.95-$12.Open: Sun-Thurs 7:30am-8:30pm; Fri-Sat 7:30am-9:30pm.Reservations not accepted.Credit Cards: AE, DC, DISC, MC, V.Subway/El: Red Line to Chicago/State.
