In the heart of the Theater District, "Jake's" has been serving Bostonians since 1868 -- even before there were theaters here. The wood floor and brass accents give the room the feeling of a saloon, or perhaps a beer garden. The hearty German specialties include Wiener schnitzel, mixed grills, bratwurst, and knockwurst. Daily specials, a large selection of sandwiches and brews on tap, and more contemporary American fare -- often including excellent prime rib -- round out the menu. Service at lunchtime is snappy, but if you want to be on time for the theater, the suspense might be greater in the restaurant than at the show.

Main courses $7-$23.Open: Mon 11:30am-8pm; Tues-Thurs 11:30am-11pm; Fri-Sat 11:30am-midnight; Sun noon-8pm.Reservations recommended at dinner.Credit Cards: AE, DC, DISC, MC, V.T: Green Line to Boylston, or Orange Line to New England Medical Center.Validated parking available.
