Johnny's Luncheonette

Cuisine: American
Price Category: Inexpensive

Johnny's is a madly popular breakfast and brunch place that also serves terrific "real" food in a neighborhood that embraces its no-frills approach. On the lowest (below street) level of an apartment-retail complex, it's a refreshingly retro place with booths along the back wall and a jukebox. Huge portions of breakfast food (served all day) include tasty omelets, fluffy flapjacks, entertainingly named egg dishes, and even fantastic porridge. Later in the day, choose from chargrilled burgers, nearly a dozen salads, excellent sandwiches, and diner-style entrees like meatloaf, macaroni and cheese, and roast turkey with all the trimmings. It gets noisy, but not as noisy as it could -- my favorite menu note anywhere nicely asks that "crying or misbehaving children be removed from our dining area."

Main courses $7-$11; breakfast items from $1.95.Open: Daily 7am-10pm.Reservations not accepted.Credit Cards: MC, V.T: Red Line to Harvard.
