This sexy red-walled restaurant feels posh without being pricey -- hence the reason so many Upper West Siders have pegged this as a favorite secret they'd rather not let out of the bag. (Sorry, guys.) The menu may seem exotic at first glance, but anyone familiar with Middle Eastern and Mediterranean fare will recognize the commonalities instantly: lots of lamb (minced, grilled, kebab), eggplant, marinated chicken, and stuffed grape leaves. The meats are excellent cuts, and everything is beautifully prepared. Consider starting with the manti (tender steamed dumplings stuffed with ground lamb and mint, and lightly drizzled with a piquant yogurt sauce) or the patlican salatas (eggplant that has been charcoal-grilled and then mashed and tossed with garlic, lemon, and extra-virgin olive oil into a yummy purée). Most impressive among the main courses was the kagit kabob (cubed baby lamb delicately cooked in parchment with fresh veggies, potatoes, and herbs). The service is attentive, and the wine list affordable. I dare you to resist a second basket of the soft, grilled pitalike Turkish bread.

Main courses $12-$19; Mon-Sat 5-7pm, fixed-price dinner $23.Open: Sun-Thurs 5-11pm; Fri-Sat 5:30-11:30pm.Reservations recommended.Credit Cards: AE, MC, V.Subway: B, C to 72nd St.
