City Crab
235 Park Ave. South
(At 19th St)
tel.: 212/529-3800
Location: At 19th St
Cuisine: Seafood
Price Category: Moderate

This big, bustling, nautical-themed bi-level restaurant is a good choice for affordable top-quality seafood. The ambience is more roll-up-your-sleeves casual and the prices cheaper than at nearby Blue Water Grill (above). The menu is huge, and preparations are always satisfying. It's easy to eat as simply or as decadently as you like: Choices run the gamut from simple but hearty bowls of clam chowder to grilled whole Maine lobsters. Always-reliable choices include fresh-off-the-boat oysters (usually a half-dozen varieties to choose from); very good Maryland crab cakes; sautéed jumbo Gulf shrimp; an honest-to-goodness New England lobster club; whole steamed Dungeness crabs; and jumbo-sized Florida stone crab claws. (They don't call this place City Crab for nothing.) The desserts tend toward comfort foods: Oreo ice-cream cake, a warm brownie, New York cheesecake, Key lime pie. The service can be slow, but don't let that keep you from coming.

$7-$17 lunch; 3-course "express lunch" $15 (Mon-Fri 11:30am-3:30pm); $14-$30 dinner (most under $20).Open: Mon-Fri 11:30am-11:30pm; Sat noon-11:30pm; Sun noon-11pm.Reservations recommended.Credit Cards: AE, MC, V.Subway: 4, 5, 6, N, R, L to 14th St./Union Sq.
