The hip SoHo-goes-south of the border decor -- deep mango walls, candles, folk art pieces, rough-hewn furniture -- creates an artsy-rustic atmosphere in which to dig into surprisingly good Old Mexico fare. The fresh-baked, multicolored corn chips (not free; $2.50) come with a fresh and tangy salsa. Main choices range from excellent, well-stuffed burritos to heaping fajita platters. Fans shouldn't pass on the nutty, chocolaty mole (one of the best in the city). Another winner is the carnitas, tender shredded pork soaked in a sweet-citrus marinade of oranges, lemons, limes, and garlic, then grilled with a pepper salsa and served on a heaping plate with freshly made white corn tortillas. The margaritas are terrific. Beware: The room can get LOUD as weekend evenings wear on.

Main courses $8-$16.Open: Sun-Thurs noon-11:30; Fri-Sat noon-midnight.Reservations accepted for parties of 6 or more.Credit Cards: AE, MC, V.Subway: 6 to Spring St.
