Tucked away on a quiet corner in the heart of the Village, this neighborhood stalwart is easygoing and charming, and the authentic food is consistently terrific. The room is softly lit and comfortably furnished, with a first-date ambience and lovely murals adding a Mediterranean touch, plus a bar in a separate back room that locals love. All of your favorites are on the menu, from octopus to moussaka to baklava. Start off with the puréed salad combination platter, which includes hearty hummus and a delightfully salty taramosalata (caviar purée), plus warm-from-the-oven pita. The spanakopita is dense and flaky, as it should be. The rich and gooey ouzo-soaked sagazaki will salve your disappointment that it doesn't arrive at your table flaming. Gus's Greek salad arrives heavy with feta and accompanied by perfectly piquant stuffed grape leaves. Among the mains, the lamb souvlaki is always a better cut than you'd expect for the price, cooked to order, and accompanied with nicely grilled veggies, herbed rice, and creamy tzatziki (a yogurt-and-cucumber chutney). The wine list is reasonably priced and contains some interesting Mediterranean selections.

Mezes $4-$10.50; main courses $7-$14 at lunch and brunch, $13.50-$23 at dinner (most less than $20); fixed-price Sun brunch $12.Open: Mon-Thurs noon-4pm and 5-11pm; Fri noon-4pm and 5-11:30pm; Sat 5-11:30pm; Sun 10:30am-4pm and 5-11pm.Reservations recommended.Credit Cards: AE, DC, DISC, MC, V.Subway: 1, 9 to Christopher St.
