This new, upscale Mexican has become the rage of the Flatiron district. Crowds were so thick at the restaurant (and bar) when I last visited there was an assigned restroom traffic controller. Could it be the incredible margaritas -- try the prickly pear cactus or the tangerine margarita -- and the over 100 varieties of tequila that caused the restroom congestion?
The guacamole here, made fresh at your table, is a show in itself. I asked for spicy, but for my taste, it lacked the bite and citrus tang of a really great guacamole. The fish tacos, made with red snapper, in a soft taco with fresh coleslaw are outstanding as are the many ceviches, especially pulpito (baby octopus). The Mexican standard, chicken mole en poblano, is very good, though not worth the steep price (almost $20). In general, stay away from the traditional offerings and explore the more innovative dishes such as chipotle-tamarind glazed mahi mahi, ancho-seared big eyed tuna, and ten-chile barbecued baby back ribs; such dishes -- and those sublime tequilas -- are what sets Dos Caminos apart from your local taqueria.
