Isamu Noguchi Garden Museum

No place in the city is more Zen than this marvelous indoor/outdoor garden museum showcasing the work of Japanese American sculptor Isamu Noguchi (1904-88). Unfortunately, the original building in Long Island City, built in 1927 and purchased by Noguchi in 1975, has been closed for renovation and is scheduled to open later in 2003, but at press time, no official announcement had been made. Until the renovations are complete, the museum has established temporary exhibition space in nearby Sunnyside, Queens. Before heading out, however, check website or call to confirm where the museum will be located. In Sunnyside, space is limited to indoor exhibitions, it's still worth visiting to see a beautifully curated collection of the artist's masterworks in stone, metal, wood, and clay; you'll even see theater sets, furniture, and models for public gardens and playgrounds that Noguchi designed. A free guided tour is offered at 2pm. The museum shop will continue to sell Noguchi's Akari lamps as well as books, cards, posters, and the like
