NIGHTLIFE: THE CLUB & MUSIC SCENE Frommer
Hammerstein Ballroom

In recent years, this midsize venue has become one of the city's most popular rock stages, hosting such acts as Everything But the Girl, Moby, Bush, Belle & Sebastian, the Cranberries, Youssou N'Dour, prefab boy band O-Town, and Fatboy Slim (who hosted a fabulous deejay party). The sound system is very good, and the stage is mounted high enough that sight lines are decent even from the main floor. The side balconies are always reserved for VIPs, but the main balcony level, graded for good views and boasting comfortable theater-style seating, is usually open to regular Joes and Janes like us. However, you have to have a mezzanine-level ticket to gain access, so request one when you're buying if you want one (there's usually no cost difference). Otherwise, you'll end up on the general-admission, standing-room-only floor, which some (not me!) prefer.
