NIGHTLIFE: THE CLUB & MUSIC SCENE Frommer
Bowery Ballroom

This marvelous space is run by the same people behind the pleasing Mercury Lounge . The Bowery space is bigger, accommodating a crowd of 500 or so, and even better. The stage is big and raised to allow good sight lines from every corner. The sound couldn't be better, and Art Deco details give the place a sophistication that doesn't come easy to general-admission halls. My favorite spot is on the balcony, which has its own bar and seating alcoves. This place is a favorite with alt-rockers like Vic Chesnutt, Travis, Cracker, Rinocerose, Shudder to Think, and the marvelous Toshi Reagon, as well as more established acts (Neil Finn, Patti Smith), who thrive in an intimate setting. Save on the service charge by buying advance tickets at Mercury's box office.
