SHOPPING: DEPARTMENT STORES Frommer
Henri Bendel

This gorgeous Fifth Avenue store is a lot of fun to browse. It feels like you're shopping in the town house of a confident, monied old lady who doesn't think twice about throwing on a little something by Anna Sui and an outrageously wide-brimmed hat to go out shopping for the day -- and she's got the panache to pull it off. It's a superstylish, high-ticket collection for ladies with a flair for the funky and frilly -- but the sales are good, and there are always some one-of-a-kind accessories that make affordable souvenirs (and earn you one of the black-and-white striped shopping bags, the best in town). The interior is divine, so take a break from perusing the racks to look around every once in a while. The only downside is that there's no shoe department. The pretty tearoom looks out on Fifth Avenue through Lalique windows.
