B&N dominates the urban landscape with more locations than any other chain. The Union Square location is my favorite: The selection is huge and well organized, the store is comfortable and never feels overcrowded, and you're welcome to browse -- or nab a comfy chair and read -- for as long as you like. There's a cafe, of course, and an extensive magazine stand. Many locations host an active calendar of readings and author appearances, often starring such luminaries as Martin Amis and Elmore Leonard.
