SHOPPING: DEPARTMENT STORES Frommer
ABC Carpet & Home

This two-building emporium is legendary, and it deserves to be: It's the ultimate home fashions and furnishings department store. On the west side of the street is the stunning 10-floor home emporium. Shopping ABC has often been compared to taking a fantasy tour of your ancestor's attic: The goods run the gamut from Moroccan mosaic-tile end tables to hand-painted Tuscan pottery to Tiffany-style lamps to distressed bed frames made up with Frette linens to much, much more, all carefully chosen and exquisitely displayed. There's a whole floor of on-the-bolt upholstery fabrics to die for. Prices aren't bad comparatively speaking, but these are high-end goods. The Parlor floor boasts an eclectic collection of beautiful gift items and housewares, and some of the smaller items are quite affordable. Occasional sales yield substantial discounts. Adjacent is Belgian import Le Pain Quotidien, serving wonderful lunch fare and elegant desserts. Across the street is the multifloor carpet store, which boasts a stunning collection of area rugs.
